  1. I just bought my Pioneer DVD-R A04 three days ago and I've successfully burnt a DVD-R that plays on my PS2 (I love this site!).

I find it a bit hard, however, to choose the bit rate just right so that it has about the same (or slighty less) quality as the same source file.

For example it would probably not make sense to encode a 100 min 352x288 Divx file that is 200MB to a 4GB 720x480 DVD.

My question is, is there a calculator, a table of some sort that would tell me to use a certain bitrate (among other settings) while encoding a DVD based on the dimensions and bit rate and such of the source file?

    Thanks! This site is great!

A bitrate calculator? You should check the tools section.
    Hello.

  3. Ok, so let's say I have a 665MB divx file, it is 89m22s, and has 128kbps audio, so the vcdhelp bitrate calculator tells me that's 923kbps.

Now the divx file is 640x336, which will become 720x378 when resized for DVD (or should I use 720x480, and include the black bars at the top and bottom?).

So should I multiply the bitrate by the increase of the frame resolution like so:
    ((923kbps total - 128kbps audio) / (640*336)) *
    (720*378) = 1006kbps + 384kbps audio = 1390kpbs

So should I use 1390kbps when encoding DVD? Seems very low.
Can you directly use the bitrate from a DivX file for a DVD like this?
Isn't DivX of higher quality than DVD at the same bitrate?

My question really is there some sort of way to derive the DVD bitrate from the Divx rate in such a way that it retains the same quality?
    For example : DVD Bitrate = n * Divx Bitrate where n = ???.
