  1. Please help. I'm a newbie to all these video compression formats and i'd simply like to burn my 720x480 dv video into a better quality CD than what VCD gives me now. I would like to try SVCD but the dammed ratio is only 480x480. This ruins the aspect ratio of my movie. PLEASE ADVISE...

  2. Try a clip - it will look ok when you view it on a tv. You could always invest in burning DVDs if CD isn't good enough.

The aspect ratio of SVCD is not 480x480, it is 4:3 just like your dv source. The dvd player will stretch it to 640x480 during playback so that it fits the set aspect ratio. So as kitty said, it will look ok on your tv.

If you want to see how it looks on the pc then use a software dvd player that recognizes the aspect ratio flag such as PowerDVD or WinDVD.

It's tough to get good quality with a dv source because it is so complex. You really should look into using some softening filters to make your source more compressible.

You could be an idiot, but I won't be the judge of that.

Do yourself a favour and try encoding a SVCD with 480x480 resolution. You will find out quickly why 480x480 doesn't come out square in SVCD.

I suggest you follow one of the excellent guides on this site. If you use TmpegEnc you can use the SVCD template. Make sure you choose the correct format - PAL or NTSC.

Then burn it to a CD using one of many good programs - Nero is pretty easy to use.

If it works - you're not an idiot.
If you ask more questions without reading the guides... You will probably get flamed like most idiots usually do.

Now take a big Bong hit

    Hello swbn1993

If you can't live without 720x480 then encode your MPEG file with TMPGEnc as 720x480 MPEG2 file and burn it with Nero as a SVCD, non compliant SVCD. If you want better quality, jackup the bit rate in TMPGEnc to where your stand alone dvd player can't stand it.

Some DVC players can handel over 4 mbps in SVCD mode.
