    3. You cant...well you can split it to two dvdrs or use double sided dvdrs

    4. Only double side 9gbs exist which mean that you must flip them. Dual layers dvdrs (9GB) and dual layer writers does not exist.

forgot to add exist to point 4.

Note that double side and dual layer are different, double side means that it is 4.7GB on each side of the dvd(you must flip the disc) and dual layer is two 4.7GB layers.¨

dvd-r/w and dvd+r/w are the main dvd writing formats and new dvd writers support both so you dont have to choose and both support double side dvdrs(not DUAL).

dvd-ram is not supported by most standalone dvd players so it is not that useful.

dvd-rom is a computer dvd drive.

  7. well he is wrong in one standard, DVD-Ram is very useful, specially if you use a standalone DVD Recorder then they beat the pants off a DVD RW, since you can't edit on a DVD RW like you can a DVD-Ram, A RAm disc acts just like a large hard drive you can erase, re-arange and play and record the same time on them, you can not do this with a DVD RW.
Its really ausome when I am recording a 2 hour race and come in one hour into the recording and hit play and start watching the begining of the race while it still goes ahead and records the rest of the race and you can pause, search and stop while playing and no effect the recording thats going on, yeah try that with a DVD RW, NOT!!
I have not problem finding panasonic standalones and DVD Rom drives by toshiba and panasonic that supports Ram, granted it way limited, but where else can you get a 4.7 gig portable hard drive for $8, yes all I pay for the Rams are $8 and tranfer data back and forth from computers.

This thread is quite old, but it is interesting to see that DVD-RAM was around in 2002. (Although I had read that it was presented in 1996 by the DVD Forum.) The laptop computer I have (purchased in August 2007) is capable of writing to DVD-RAM. I read somewhere that gave the general comparison between DVD-/+RW and DVD-RAM was that the RW have a cycle life of about 1000 rewriting compared to 100,000 for RAM. And another advantage of DVD-RAM discs is that of long durability estimated at a minimum of 30 years. I also remember that it had a significant technical difference from other types DVD media in that it was physically more like magnetic drive media that used concentric tracks instead of a spiral.
