  1. Still pretty new to this and I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer. I've searched high and low on the internet and on this site with no luck so far.

I have ATI MMC 7.7.0.1 with ATI DVD 7.6 and the software works great for both capture and file playback of SVCD quality captures through the ATI file player. However, when I install Ulead Movie Factory, something gets installed/changed that causes the MPEG-2 files to get screwed up when played by file player. If you skip ahead or fast forward/rewind, the file goes into permanent fast speed.

If I uninstall Ulead MF, File Player works fine again. I've searched the internet and this site extensively with no luck. Also haven't heard back from Ulead yet about a fix and their site has no solutions. Checking the codecs section of System information shows that they are all the same both before and after MF is installed so I'm pretty confused.

Thanks for any suggestions and help!

    Bud15,
I can't say with 100% certainty this is the case with you since I've never used the Ulead Movie Factory, but from past experience using Ulead VideoStudio a proprietary MPEG-2 codec gets installed (Ligos I believe) and makes itself the default decoder for the whole system. Even after removing the aforementioned software the Ligos plug-in remained and I was forced to manually remove it from the registry and reinstall MMC to get it back to be the default handler. I'm not a big fan of Ulead products as you might have guessed and I'm not trying to influence you, but I think more than likely this is the cause of your problem.

  3. Neither the ATI MMC software nor Ulead Movie Factory have anything to do with Ligos or our software. Ulead uses Mainconcept now, though I don't know if it's used in Movie Factory.

    rsaintj,
Normally I'd ignore this, but you have a habit of stomping on my posts. Do I need to post a screenshot to prove my point? I don't know who the hell you are, but you so full of BS it's pathetic. I don't give a damn if you work for Ligos or not, but get your facts straight if your going to post such nonsense.

Thanks for the info. I looked in the Ulead directory and there is a Ligos Installer there but there is no uninstaller. There is also a file called MPEG2.dll but it is only in the Ulead directory and not in the system32 directory with the rest of the codecs. Is it possible that somehow that has become the MPEG2 codec by default?

I'm not sure how to go about editing the registry either without screwing the whole thing up. What's different about my situation than the situation you described is that the problem goes away when I uninstall the Ulead software completely. But again, there doesn't appear to be any changes to the Video codecs when I install or uninstall the Ulead software.

What entry would I look for to correct the registry to fix the default MPEG2 codec? Thanks for all help! Hopefully I'll hear from Ulead about this eventually too.

Here's an article from Microsoft support that goes into detail on how to edit you registry safely:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q322756
As to the specific keys you have to delete I can't help you there since I long ago deleted the software. If I remember correctly there were 2 keys in all, one located in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software and the other in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software. Both keys were specific to Ligos and you can safely delete them as long as no other software depends on them. One thing I need to stress vehemently, back up your registry and back up all your user data before even attempting this!! And it might not hurt to create a restore point since your using XP just for good measure if you need to roll back. My advice to you would be that unless it's causing you a major headache just leave it alone unless you're in the mood to learn more about your OS, but be prepared to reformat your drive if something screws up.
