I have the apex 1500. It is reportedly able to play MPEG1/2 ISO and DVD-MP3. So I went and tried to do this.

For the MPEG1/2 ISO, here's what I tried:
    1) burn a fully compliant VCD to a CDR using the CDROM ISO Mode 1 option in Nero. Doesn't work
    2) burn a fully compliant VCD to CDR using the CDROM ISO Mode 2 option in Nero. Doesn't work
    3) burn a fully compliant VCD to CDR using the CDROM ISO/UDF in Mode 1 option in Nero. Does't work

    For the DVD-MP3:
    1) burn a whole bunch of MP3 to a Verbatum DVD-R in Nero. Doesn't work.

Could someone tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong?

Not adding your unfortunate experiences to the DVD-player reports.
    -or-
Not taking the model back and getting one that'll take care of your needs.

    -or-
Try another burner program, media type, burn speed...

Remember, there are NO standards for those format varieties, so EVERYTHING is hit-or-miss and player model dependant (even firmware version/ship vintage dependant), no matter what you've read. That's supposed to be one of the upsides of having standards.

    Good luck,
    Scott

  3. Take a couple to an electronics store, pretend to be a buyer and test them in other machines that work with cdr's/vcd, if they don't play there then something was done wrong. If your dvd is showing invalid disc, then the ones in the store don't even need to be hooked to a tv, just wait for the play display
