  1. hi guys,

    I'm about to buy a dvd-player.
My question is:"Can I play VCD's (and SVCD's) if my standalone player supports CD-R and CD-RW or does it also have to support something else?"

I think it can play everything?

As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

Supporting CD-R and CDRW is meaningless to (S)VCD compatibility but very necessary to play burnt discs. First I would see if you can find some advertisement on the web to indicate if it plays VCD or SVCD. If you have access to it physically I would burn a sample off this website and test it. If its not in the VCDHelp players list, then look at all models of the same brand and look for trends in compatibility. If all or most of their models support it, then it probably does. Another thing to look for is MP3 support, I have found a majority of players supporting mp3 also support (S)VCD. I can't think of anything else to recommend.

  5. Why don't you post the brand and model of dvd player that you wish to buy, someone might have it and can give you info.

Mostly it's hard to know if it support SVCD or not becuz not so many players show spec for SVCD but now things change some player won't support for VCD like APEX.

  6. Check the DVD Players compatiblity and user comments section under the other catagory along the left side of this web page. they have a very large reference to wether or not your DVD player will play vcds.

  9. It's from a cheap brand named Magnum, and I don't know the full name of the player.
However that this brand is sold in a cheap supermarket chain here in Western Europe it should be of good quality, because I already bought 2 perfectly working pc's there.
I also can't find a website from the brand on the internet, but I know the brand for some years know.
The site of the shop is http://www.aldi.be/ALDI_BN/home.htm (and then follow the link ALDI-buitenkansjes.
    It can play DVD, music-CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP-3, foto CD (JPEG-format).

    Please help.
