  1. Whenever i convert an AVI to VCD i always get a really noticeable drop in quality, and the file size always goes above 800mb's.

I have downloaded other files from people and they have made VCD's with very good quality, and with only 700mb's. How do they do this? What program have they used?

I have tried TMPG, but this is slow and only gives ok results (i use the slowest rate of conversion)

  2. Quality:

this really depends on the type of movie, and what kind of divx codec (hi or lo motion) has been used in the original encoding.
For instance, an action movie like for instance Starship Troopers, there is a lot of movement on the screen. Now, with VCD (mpeg-1) there is too much information to be handled, resulting in "blocky" images.
You can see the difference immediately when you compare the DIVX to the VCD conversion, see that the screensize differs?
When converting, you will lose quality. Always. Whether you go from DVD straight to VCD, or from DIVX to VCD, it will be slightly worse that the original file.

    Size:

a little over 1 hour of VCD (mpg-1) video will take up to 700mb of size. Thus, a full feature movie will always take at least 2 cd's when in VCD.

    Resizing:

Use M1-Edit-Pro for cutting the file into parts. It gives the best result.

    Tool:

Use TMPGENC. It does the job really good (slow, 4 hours for 1,5 hour movie on a p3-800/256mb). If you have the diskspace, use batch encode, no use waiting around

    Extra:

I myself tend to encode the DIVX movies with a lot of action to SVCD, and the "normal" movies to VCD.

PS: Experts, dont come with a lot of tech-mumbo, I know it allready, I just wanted to make this easy sounding, not impossible...

When you use TMPGEnc you use the LOAD button and you click on Video cd (pal) the settings are now good for vcd(mpeg1)
