  1. I'm still a bit new at this and my energy level is gone from experimenting, so.....Very simply, I want to convert/compress files I record through my ATI TV Tuner down to reasonable size without much quality loss. Right now a 1hr show comes out at 2+GB, I want it down to 100-200MB. I've downloaded numerous TV shows in AVI format that are more than good enough quality wise, 1hr long, and only 100-200 MB so there has to be some fairly easy way to do this...I'm just not smart enough or patient enough to figure it out! I've tried VirtualDub, TMPG, etc. (Doesn't mean I've done it right...just tried them!). Any help would be appreciated!

  3. Tried to compress in an mpeg4 using VirtualDub (pack synchronization error when trying to open file to convert), Vidomi (also won't open the file), and TMPGEnc (Video comes through, no sound). Another program? Something I'm still missing with these? I know it's probably something small I'm missing...anybody want to help a dummy?!?!

  4. To follow up on what I'm trying to achieve, one of the files I've downloaded (and trying to convert to) is a 1 hr TV show with the following specs:

    182 MB AVI File

    Audio:
    11.9kb/s
    44,100 Ster. Sample Rate

    Video:
    320X240
    2607 Seconds
    78143 Frame Count
    29.97 f/sec
    71.58 kb/sec Data Rate
    24 Bit Video Sample
    DiVxMPG4 V3

I just need to know how to get there from a mpg video capture the size of 2+GB. As I said before, I've tried a bunch of different programs a bunch of different ways, but nothing seems to work --either picture quality is garbage or size is still too big or I get errors using the program. Any help would be appreciated, though at this point, the more specific the better!

honestly what you have now as the source is as about small as your going to get ... mpeg1 is going to be larger and mpeg2 is going to be a LOT larger ..

only way to make what you have smaller is to A. lower the frame rate to 1/2 (encode everyother frame) B. lower the data rate C. reduce the size

b and c will substancially reduce the quality - "a" will not be to bad .

the format it is in right now is one of the most tightly packed compressed formats around .

  6. Sorry...I wasn't very clear.....what I have right now is the 2.7GB mpg, what I WANT is to get that 2GB file to the same size/quality as the other file I downloaded, the 182MB file, since they are basically the same thing (a 1hr TV show). The AVI file isn't the one I'm trying to compress, the 2GB mpg file is. However, nothing seems to work. The lowest file size I've gotten so far (that's still watchable) is about 600MB, and that was still an mpg. I appreciate the help so far! Back to experimenting...
