  1. On my system, Nero doesn't actually truncate mpeg files, rather it shortens them by say 60 mb on a 450 mb mpeg-1 file.

For years, I have used Nero 5.5.8.4 and earlier versions without problem. However, after upgrading to version 5.5.9.9 or after installing an incompatible program, Nero is now shortening both mpeg 1 and mpeg 2 files.

When I drag and drop a mpeg, Nero reports a filesize shorter than the original - roughly 50 to 60 mbs for large mpeg 1 or 2 files. If I burn the image, the DAT file is indeed shorter and corrupt.

I have reverted to previous versions of Nero (currently 5.5.80) after cleaning the registry and made sure the Nero Winaspi32.dll matches. The problem is consistent now across all versons.

I use VCDEasy to create vcd/svcd images, and have no problems burning (well almost, see below). Fireburner, cdrwin, and diskjuggler run fine. Roxio EzCD was installed and removed. Using Adaptec ASPI32 4.60 (and no problems with 4.71 previously).

There is a second possible (but highly implassible) issue with my burn of two movies recently downloaded from the net and imaged with VCDEasy. On the second cd of each movie, their is a 10 minute segment that is a repeat of a 10 minute segment on CD1. That is, cd2 has a ten minute segment overlayed (replaced) with a 10 minute segment from cd1. I believe the movies are corrupt, but others burning the same files say there is nothing wrong with the movies. I simply mention it because isn't 10 minutes the same as about 60 mb?

    Anyway, its a perplexing problem.

    Thanks.

  2. Well, I found my second problem. When watching two svcd's (or vcd's) back to back - in this case two cds for one movie - on my Hollywood Plus mpeg card, I get this weird problem where I see a repeat of a ten minute segment from the first cd while watching the second. I mean, I can scrub the time slider back and forth and there it is. If it happens again, I want to find out where this segment is being cached (disk or memory). There was nothing wrong with the movies. Thats what I get for being too cheap to buy a decent decoder card.

Still, if anyone can help with the Nero truncate problem, I would appreciate it. I went back to the v4.71 adaptec apsi32 drivers, and got rid of cdr4_2k.sys (roxio leftover or from Mediaplayer burn plugin) and cdralw2k.sys. Looks like a long series of uninstalls coming up.

  3. Here is some info on what Nero sees and what other programs report. Mpeg-1 file is good, but Nero is dropping about 54 mb of data. Although Virtual dub is reporting 74mb of audio data, do you think this could be an audio problem. Thanks

I have no idea why Nero is truncating your files or why you are getting 10 minute segments repeated. I can't help but think that these problems are somehow related and need to be solved. I just wanted to suggest a possible work around for the Nero problem.

If you have daemon tools installed, it creates a virtual cdrom drive that you can load a disk image to and then just use Nero to make a simple disk copy.

    So the steps are:

    1 - get and install: http://www.daemon-tools.com/daemon_tools.htm
2- right click on the new tray icon, and select Virtual CD/DVD-ROM>Device...>Mount Image
3- Point to your cue file
4- Open Nero and do a disk copy from the new virtual drive to your CD burner

  5. Thank you for your reply.

Typically, my workflow is to take a mpg and drop it into Nero or VCDEasy to create and burn a VCD or SVCD. I believe the situation you describe has more to do with DVD ripping to a bin/cue.

Right now, there is no problem with creating a bin/cue with VCDEasy and burning it with some other program. My problem is just when I drag and drop a mpg into Nero, then Nero reports the imported mpeg at rough 10 to 11% less than its correct size.

I've bee all over this, check to see which DLL's and registry entries used by various programs including Nero - nothing seems admiss. Howerver, Nero uses DirectSound, so thats my next area to explore.

I will check out daemon-tools in due course. Thanks again.
