I would like to extract the main audio and video track from a DVD, without recompressing it.
I use DVD2SVCD for DVD-to-SVCD conversions, and DVD-to-DVDR conversions. But those processes recompress.
Based on a post on these forums, I tried using DVDx, but that seems to recompress to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 (SVCD), or convert to AVI.

smartripped yields VOB's, IFO's, etc.... how do I get .MPG or similiar (and an audio track?) from the dvd?

use direct stream extraction .. you will end up with a mpeg file and a ac3 file ...
follow its guides on how to do --- real easy .. -
All you are doing is demuxing..There are lots of progs that can demux Unencypted dvds or if its still encypted use Smartripper or dvddecypter
