I am trying to capture HIGH quality AVI so I can produce (using Video Factory) and then make mpeg2 SVCD. The issue I was having was with higher resolutions.

I have found that ANYTHING higher than 352 x 240 on capture causes the initial AVI to be jerky and look like a series of lines. The picture pulses, clear, blur, clear blur, very fast. Thats at 720 X 480 all the way down. It goes completely stable at 352 by 240.

I gather this is my ATI AIW 128 Pro restriction. So question, can I get past this with MMC 7.6 or is it in the driver ? Can the card go higher clearly ?

Thanks ! I have posted several times seeking answers and if this is common (which I have seen it is) no one has really answered...If there is a way, PLEASE post a step by setp so I can load/build/whatever to get better quality.

  2. Are you capturing from a VCR source? May be macrovision.

What codec do you capture with?
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'

I am capturing from a Sony analog Hi-8 cam. Video in , audio in. No macrovision, I shot the film. Codec on capture(according to ati) is UYVY (native)

But I also have a choice (for some reason) of
    UYVY
    YUY2
    YVU9
    YV12
    DV
    Indeo
    Ligos
    MJPEG
    CINEPAK
    INTEl (various)
    MS MJPEG4
    and the list goes on

Is there a better one than the default UYVY (native)
I am really lost when it comes to these ..Thanks

    Okay,

    Here is the status
I tried VIRTUAL dub to capture(bit of a bear on setup) but again captured at 720 x 480.

If you view the AVI you see it is comprised of a series of horizontal lines.
I put it in VIDEO factory (small clip) and let it render it as a 720 x 480 AVI for DV. ( smaller than a UNCOMPRESSED)
I went through TMPG and this time made sure I said it was intelerlaced. It came out great MPEG 2.

I think video factory MPEG 2 is treating it as non interlaced. I noticed that the thing HAD motion blur but somehow , with the filters and such, TMPG took it out and straightened.

The real question is, why so much motion blue at 720 by 480 and not 352 by 240. Is it because the higher resolution shows it more ?

I have a process, but now I want a refund from Video Factory for the MPEG2 plugin

video factory used the ligos go-motion mpeg encoder (which is even used on some pretty high end NLE systems) .. they switched now to MAIN Concept (on the latest version of video video factory which is really vegas video) ..

i never got really great results either with the ligos engine .. though i hear the newer versions are better ..
