    divx codecs
fast motion gives better quality in ...... fast motion scenes
low motion gives better quality in ...... low motion scenes
years ago sbc(Smart Bitrate Control) gave the best quality you can find by using low motion codec but switching to the fast motion codec when action increase(why most of the best avi's say"low motion" for codec under properties.

if you want the best as of 10/05/02, then it's divx 5.02.

    o.k. you want technical answers.

    DivXc32.dll Video Codec Version 4.1.00.3920 (Low-Motion codec)

    DivXc32f.dll Video Codec Version 4.1.00.3917 (Fast-Motion codec)

Fast-Motion is intended for DivX movies with lots of action and fast scene changes. Low-Motion is intended for DivX movies where the picture doesn't change much between frames. The reason for having the two options is because they both have their advantages. Fast-Motion encoded DivX movies are able to keep up with the fast changing scenes when the Low-Motion version would miss frames. On the other hand Fast-Motion encoding slow paced movies produces a "blocky" picture when the Low-Motion version gives a smoother picture. In other words, you select the codec based on what type of movie you want to encode.

    ---------------or--------------

    use divx 5.02

    depends on source
clip of people just sitting and talking-low motion codec
clip of marines invading beach under heavy bombardment-fast motion codec

i guess you mean that at a ceartain quality level, which one would have the smaller size? i refer back to your 3rd question for the answer.
in a fast motion clip-you will have a smaller file size with the fast motion then the low motion to achieve the same quality level.

in a low motion clip-you will have a smaller file size with the low motion then the fast motion to achieve the same quality level.

the problem is when you have both low and fast motion scenes in the same movie(just about all of them)then what do you do? you choose newer versions of the codec. like the newest video drivers. the newest software. etc.

but you can always encode some test clips"yourself", and then you can use whatever codec looks the best to "you".
