    that will let me turn a single frame in a video into an bmp image.

    Virtual dub delivers booooable color quality (it looks like crap) and everything has lines in it.

    There are probably much more elegant ways to do it, but I just use the capture utility in Windows Media Player. This works fine for my purposes (making menu screens for my VCDs).
