  1. Out of MPEG VCD, SVCD, CVD, XVCD, XSVCD or DivX, which is the best quality?

  2. DivX will probably get you the best quaulity, becouse of its MPeg 4. The only issue thier is no standalone systems that can play it as of yet.
I personaly like SVCD, The ablity to play on my DVD player.

  3. The question is inappropriate or more details need to be given. If you are talking about a file of certain size and length (700MB for 100 min movie, for example) encoded/made in those formats then, most of the time, DivX (Avi) is the best format in terms of picture quality but it is not supported by standalone players yet. CVD (China VCD) is not a common format as isn't, probably, XVCD and XSVCD. SVCD is better quality than VCD but you can only burn 40-55 min to a 700MB CDR (VCD can do 80 min). XVCD/XSVCD can be both better and worse quality than VCD/SVCD because it is basicly a NON-Standard VCD/SVCD and all the settings and bitrates can be changed to make a better (bigger file size consequently) or worse quality (smaller size - usually used to fit a movie of any length on 1 CD) file whereas VCD and SVCD have certain bitrates and settings that can't be changed to keep their compatibility on optimal level.

  4. DivX looks great when played on a Computer Monitor but when it comes to NTSC TV Broadcast, SVCD is the best hands down.

  5. ZeroKool, you seem to be a very experienced person. I think I'll chose VCD since the movie is 135min long, but I was wondering, what does the average DVD player play, what sort of format (VCD, MPEG?)

  6. ShadowRider,

look in the dvd players section on this website and see which formats your dvd player can handle...

personally, i would go w/ SVCD if you have a chance...

there is a HUGE difference between standard VCD 2.0 and a well-done, high quality SVCD .. of course, the # of discs for SVCD is usually also more, but the quality is well worth it

  7. Note, some DVD players will play MPEG2 VCDs but not SVCD. Its the same MPEG2 format, but the directories (and probably some other things) are different.

Mine is this way. It won't play an SVCD burned by Nero, but if I burn that same MPEG2 on a VCD (with the non-standard option, of course), it works - and looks almost like a DVD.
