  1. I'm not a newbie to working with video but freely admit I have not worked with Mpeg2 very much.
I capture from our satellite feed with Virtual Dub using Huffy 2.11 for compression. Nothing odd or special about my caps.
The problem: I can convert and join mpeg2 with TMPGEnc but I can't cut it. I get an error about not being able to determine source length with DirectShow. The file loads but the slider and everything is grayed out so I can't edit. M2-Edit Pro cuts the same mpeg2 files fine but I don't care for that program for various reasons.
I have tried rearranging the environmental priorities with no luck. I don't think it's a codec problem. I use the Nimo Codec Pack V5 build 8, Elecard Mpeg2 decoder for WMP, Virtual Dub 1.4 and many different versions of TMPGEnc.
All versions 2.0 - 2.58 of TMPGEnc produce the same error. I use the standard ntsc svcd template when I convert. I am running Win2000 Pro SP3, DirectX 8.1, Nvidia Capture drivers v1.16.
    I'd appreciate any feedback!
    Thanks

    Martha Wash,
It's a known bug in TMPGEnc. There are various work-arounds posted in the forum, but I've had limited success with any of them. If you’re not worried about doing frame accurate cutting and only want to span the file across multiple CD's I'd suggest using bbMPEG. It's freeware and does an excellent job. You can find a good how-to guide here: http://www.vcdhelp.com/bbmpegedit.htm
Hope this has been some help to you....

  3. Kayfam,
Thanks for the reply. I did manage to solve the problem....although entirely by accident.
I loaded an mpeg2 file into M2-Edit and then opened TMPGEnc and loaded the same file. I didn't get the error so I closed M2-Edit and TMPGEnc worked fine. I then closed TMPGEnc and loaded a different mpeg2 file and it worked fine again. I'm hoping it is a permanent solution!
    Thanks again.
