  1. DVD rips would be so much better with surround sound, but I can't figure out how to make a multi-channel mp3. Anybody want to help?

If you are ripping to divx you can use dolby digital (ac3).

  3. True, but the file size is soo much higher. Plus it would just be nice to have multi-channel mp3. The lowest that I can compress a .ac3 is 224kbps, not really low enough to put a movie on one CD. I am sure many people would like to surround sound mp3s. I can't be the only one right?

  4. Speaking to an expert a short while ago about the very same thing, he said no one would bother as mp3 is too lossy to handle .ac3 well. Not sure if that is true or not but that is what was said.

Why have surround sound mp3 anyway if it can't be played
    in a standalone player?

    They say, btw, that
MPEG-4 surround will be encoded in a similar way as Divix
for those standalones able to play it in the near future.
