I plan on transferring my camcorder cassetes to CD's.
    I have a new Maxtor ATAT100 40GB (5400rpm) drive.
Is it necessary, or just a good idea, to use a hard drive cooler?
If so what are the types that you use?
I'm wondering if all that writing to disk really heats up the disk a lot.
    thanks

For a 5400 rpm drive.... no

If you had a 7200 or higher then you might need to investigate fans if you were having a heat issue.

  3. csaag,

the speed of your hdd is not really the issue. Check some of the
cooling sites on the web. If your hdd is uncomfortable to hold
after an hour or so then a cooling plate (slimline fan on top) might
assist moreso than a cheap slot fan set.Heat does increase spindle wear and tear.

    Thanks for the info.
I did try downloading Motherboard monitor to see the hard disk temps but that feature didn't work with my setup so I'll have to try the 'manual' approach to see if heat is an issue.

  5. Speed isn't the issue per se, but there's a pretty good correlation between HD speed & heat among same generation drives.

having said that, I never had any heat probs with any 7200RPM drives.
