  1. I have downloaded an AVI and its properties do not show what CODEC is used <unknown>

The clip plays in media player under XP but no sound or video.

The filename starts [PZ] <-- does this indicate a CODEC that I don't know of.

I've got DIVX, TPG and M$ MPG4 installed but these dont open it.

    Any ideas?

  2. try looking at the AVI file with a hex editor.. paying specific attention to the first few hundred bytes (or so).. usually you'll see the string "vids" followed by a four byte code for the appropriate codec that is needed. for example: "vidsMP42" or "vidsDIVX".. actually there are two FourCC codes in an
AVI file and they dont always match up.. (why, anybody?)..

or, instead of a hex editor you can use this little program called FourCC Code Changer to view an AVI's codec.

then you'll know which codec you'll need to download and install. read more over here:

i think the FourCC Code Changer is the better option than the hex editor.
