  2. EDIT.5):Your IDE cable could be fried.I go through at least 2 a year.
    1)go to http://www.adaptec.comand d/l "aspicheck"run it
and see if it detects any conflicts,if so d/l the latest aspilayer I think it
    is 4.71.
2)If that doesn't work try "forceaspi"located in Tools.
    3)Your DVD-ROM is dead,put it to rest,say a prayer....AND BUY A NEW
    ONE.

  3. So as soon as you put any CD in the drive, it flashes and ejects the disc?
Try doing this from a DOS prompt (either using a boot disk or before Windows boots up, you can hit the pause/break button at the top right of your keyboard while your BIOS is initializing) This will tell you for sure whether or not Windows is causing this problem or not. I have a sinking feeling that your drive itself may be screwed up.

Now if it just won't READ the disc, it may be something else, such as a dirty laser lense (get a drive cleaning disc) or a software problem. You can determine if it is the lens or Windows keeping the drive from reading the disc by taking your WIndows CD and trying to boot from it. To do this, make sure that your computer's BIOS is set up to use the DVDROM (the BIOS will most likely still call it a CDROM) as one of your boot devices, then just wait for it to boot to the Windows setup screen (WIndows 98) or to ask you to press any key to boot from the disk (Windows 2000, XP).

If you need more detailed advice, let me know

EDIT: First of all, what EXACLTY happens when you put a CD-ROM (or DVD for tahat matter) in the drive?
