  1. Hi. I'm looking to rip some of my DVDs. The problem is, I don't have a DVD-rom. Is it possible through any software means to rip a dvd (to SVCD) using only a cd-rom drive? I'd really like to start ripping. Thanks.

  2. From my experience, I could do it with a CD-RW.

To my knowledge, you need a drive that can read a DVD, i.e. a DVD-ROM. However, at about $40 new, this is not a major investment. It will also of course read your CD-ROMs. Just tell yourself that your CD-ROM drive was about to crap out anyway.

  4. That sounds right to me. I've not seen anyone do it without a DVD ROM.
    Thanks,

most importantly, you need a dvd rom to unlock the key on the dvd. without this, you will not be able to rip it with a ripper. get yourself a cheap(30 dollar) dvd rom.

You must have a magical CD-RW drive then (that, or you have a combo DVD/CD-RW drive).

A standard CD-RW drive will obviously not be able to read a DVD and hence you can't "rip" a DVD with one.
