  1. I'm in america, and i'm looking at buying a "all region encoded" disc. But it is in PAL rather than NTSC. Can i still play this on my systems?

I have a playstation 2 and a Liteon dvd rom drive.

    HELP ME PLEASE!

  2. Your TV (NTSC) probably cannot play a PAL DVD directly from your PS2.

The Liteon DVD-ROM should be able to play an all region PAL disc.

Although you don't need it for this DVD since it is an all region one, you might be interested to know that the Liteon DVD-Rom can probably be made to be region free if you change the firmware to a region free firmware and use DVD Region Killer (a freeware program). There is some risk to your drive when changing firmware. Be sure to know what you are doing before attempting it. See this website for more info:

Otherwise, you can also use DVD decrypter or smartripper to remove the region protection on a (region-protected) DVD.

  3. Also make sure that your TV is PAL compatible if you are using a set-top player.

One thing, my PS2 is PAL and it plays NTSC discs just fine..... surely it's the same for NTSC machines??
RealaT Bytes, but that's what life is.

  5. Flipp,

For an all-region DVD, you don't need to upgrade the firmware. It will work with your current firmware.

    Real aT,

Your PS2 works with an NTSC DVD because you probably have a NTSC/PAL TV (which are very popular outside of North America but are hard to find in North America).

Perhaps the PS2 can play PAL but unless you have an NTSC/PAL TV, it will not work. Besides the PS2 is region 1 in North America, so it can't play region 2 DVDs (there is a product called Region X that makes the PS-2 region free but you would still need an NTSC/PAL TV).

P.S. I have edited the comments that I had made above to reflect the fact that the PS2 might be able to play a PAL DVD but his TV most likely cannot.

  6. okay, so it probably won't play on my tv, but it will probably work on my dvd drive though right?

And how would i look at seeing if my tv can support PAL?

If you live in the U.S., then your TV is not PAL compatible. Only in the rest of the world are TV's multi-standard capable. If you want to play both, go to Europe and buy yourself a TV.

How many times do you have to ask this question?

  8. you don't have to be a dick about it. yg1968 said himself that it is possible to have a tv that supports it, so i was just asking a question, don't like it, don't look at the thread. I was just making sure that the dvd would work in my dvd drive, a question, which no one answered, this entire thread has been about my television/playstation 2 setup. I am just making sure it will work on my dvd drive.

  9. flipp,

I live in North America and I play PAL DVDs on my computer all the time. You should have no problem playing an all-region DVD on your computer (PAL or NTSC).

In Montreal, Canada, you can buy a multi system TV in China town. I am sure that you can also order one from the intenet if you need one.

Another option is to buy an Apex-1500 DVD Video set-top player and make it region free by changing its firmware or buying a modchip. An Apex DVD player will play PAL or NTSC DVDs on an NTSC TV. See this website for more info:

Well, maybe if you would have read your "other identical post", you would have read that, "yes", your DVD player can play a PAL with no problem, and that "no", you won't be able to watch it on your NTSC TV set. You would have then been told that your computer will have no problems with the disk. If I was going to be a "dick" about this, I would have said that you were an idiot and your question was stupid... but I didn't. Instead, I gave you your answer in both posts.

In the future, if you are really so sensitive about getting terse remarks about your wisdom, then maybe you should take up knitting as your hobby. I hear that knitters as a whole are a lot more tolerant.
