Hi! I'm new to the forum, so bear with me please. I have an HP 466Mhz, running the Cybervideo video capture card. The card works pretty well; the AVI's it produces using HUFYUV are excellent even after conversion. When I burn my VCD using Nero, though, and put it in my DVD player, it loses the smotthness. It's not obvious, just enough to catch you off guard (it's like a frame is dropped every so many). Is this normal? Am I being too picky? The picture is good and the sound is great...it's just that choppiness that is annoying me.
Thanks!

You should try to make sure where the problem is happening. As you put it you seem to think it's your burning software.
That means the avi you made was ok, and encoded avi->mpeg1 was okay as well. Or didn't you try to play the mpeg on your PC?
If you answered yes to the above, try burning your VCD at a much lower speed and see if you still have the same problem. Also if possible play your VCD on your PC and check whether the choppiness is visible there as well.
If it is, is it always in the same place or does it differ. If it differs, it might be that your standalone DVD player can't handle the mpeg bitrate - that would mean you would have to lower it. It also has been reported that VCD's are choppy on some media and not on other. Checkout the DVD Player compatiblilty list and see if you are using the correct CD-R(W)'s. -
Well, I may have to take back one statement...apparantly, according to my wife, there is a definite difference between the avi and the mpeg file and the way they play on my pc. I do look at the files first, but I just didn;t pick it up. The choppiness is so slight that its just annoying. I think you may be right about the bitrate. Does anyone know how to keep the exact same bitrate when going from avi to mpeg?

How did you encode the avi into an mpeg file? Which encoder and with what settings?

i have the same problem, when i burn to vcd and play it back on my dvd player it is choppy. i even tried to burn it at the lowest speed but it still doesn't work

I get the avi file directly from Cybervideo (I record it at 352 x 240) and then pull it over into TMPEnc (which is just a great program, by the way) and encode it as a Video-CD NTSC. Cartoons come out great (I know, fantasy versus real life!).
