  1. I was wondering if TMPGenc goes past the 2 pass VBR ? Or is there something i can do to get 3, 4, 5 , or even 9 pass VBR ? Or should i buy CCE to get this kind of VBR passes ? What is all of your expert opinions ?

TMPGEnc only does up to 2pass.

    CCE can do more.

If you set the settings right, you really don't need to go above 2-ass (whoops!) 2pass.

1 pass is to analyze, 2nd is to encode. Any more is just comparing the "error" or difference between that encode vs. the original, and adding a few coefficients to minimize this difference. It's one of those Entropy/Hyperbolic function things, which will provide diminishing returns with successive passes.

A slight change in the bitrate or matrix probably makes as much difference. (Ooh, that sounds like flame material!).

Look at what the Heavy-duty hardware encoders do (Zapex, Sony, Spruce, etc). 2-pass is the max. They just do segment re-encoding to fine-tune the bitrate on particular sections of the video.

If you're careful with quality source material (uncompressed 601, DV, or maybe even high-bitrate DVD), and with judicious use of pre-filtering, a 2-pass encode should be all that you need. But don't just take my word for it--do lots of tests with DVD-R/W's and CD-R/W's (ok, +R/W's too ) What have you got to lose-you don't need to encode 2 hours worth. Just try 30 seconds here, 2 minutes there. And you can always erase your coasters and start again. Then you could impart your knowledge and experience onto the rest of this group.

    Happy encoding!

  3. Well said Cornucopia,
Much appreciated advice. But what is better to encode in 2 pass VBR, TMPGenc or CCE ? Right now i use TMPGenc, but is CCE better or faster ?

I have not used CCE at all, but i have heard some excellent things about it. Are they all true or is it someones figment of imagination ?

you can get excellent results with either of them .. CCE is faster though ..
A lot of people feel CCE is better - but doesnt do so good at lower bit rates ...
The biggest single factor is source materal and bit rate .. well thats two factors ..

  5. Yes, there are diminishing returns with additional passes, but 2-pass is not the be all and end all. Certainly 2-pass makes a big difference over any 1-pass method and the yield from doing 3-pass is not as great. However, you will see benefits doing doing additional passes if you are willing to make the time/processing commitment.

A slight change in the bitrate or matrix probably makes as much difference
Perhaps, but these things are independent to multipass encoding...
