  1. Hi,

I have a Sony DAV S300 DVD player. This system works fine with original VCDs & DVDs. But when I try to run pirated VCDs, only some work! When I copy the contents of the same pirated VCD onto a CD-RW, it works perfectly fine. On the other hand, when I copy the contents of the pirated VCD onto a CD-R, the system does not recognize it.

My question is, why does my system recognize only some pirated CDs? Also why & how does it work when the same contents are copied onto a CD-RW & not to a CD-R? Am I missing some step in the copying process?
I use a LG CD-Writer with Nero 5.5 to copy my CDs.

    Please help.

    Regards,
    Lissy

It may very well be that your DVD doesn't support CD-R & CD-RW, even if it handles VCD. My experience is that a CD-RW is more "compatible" with factory manyfactured CD's than CD-R's, so that may explain why CD-RW's work. Or it may even be that the DVD actually support CD-RW but not CD-R, even if that sounds unlikely. CD-R and CR-RW uses different laser wavelengths (or something like that).

  3. For DVD drives that weren't designed to read CD-R or CD-RW media (e.g., many older Sony DVD models), it just so happens that the laser system on the DVD is relatively more compatible with CD-RW discs rather than CD-R. This is why for such drives, it has been common reported that CD-RW discs work better.
