  1. Hi - newbie here....

I just got done downloading One Hour Photo. When I was downloading the files were marked RAR and PAR types. Well now in my directory they look like this:

    attach20273432.uue

And they are not in any type of order. I assume I still use WINRAR but how do I know where to start? Clicking on them tells me they are in an unknown format.

Do I rename them, and if so, how do I know now which ones are PARs and which are RARs?

Thank you in advance for your help!

personally i would delete the whole mess as i think you got a fake thing but here are what those files are though - not that it is going to help you any (what you have looks like email attachments from pine ( a email system for unix))

9.1) What's this UUEncoding stuff (.uu, .uue files) all about?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UUEncode/UUdecode is a UNIX utility that will convert a binary file into
100% printable ASCII characters, so that the file may be posted or e-mailed
anywhere a text message can go. The 8-bit Atari is perfectly capable of
UUEncoding/UUdecoding as well. On the archives:

Uudecode 1.2a by John Sangster - very functional.
    filenames: Archivers/uudecode.bas, Archivers/uudecode.doc

Yet Another UU-coder by John Dunning - both decoding/encoding.
    filename: Archivers/yau.arc

Uudecode.com, Uuencode.com by ??? - "newer, cleaner, easier to use."
    filename: Utilities/uue.arc

    Dumas UU-coder by John Dunning
    filename: Cc65/dumasuu.arc

Danielle, I assume you got these files from a newsgroup on usenet. If so, you should read more about how to use newsgroups at www.timdoc.com or similar sites (newsgroups are a little off-topic for this site). You might want to get a different newsreader that decodes the attachments for you. (or do a web search for a decoder program)

If you didn't get these by newsgroups or email... then who knows why the files were left encoded.

  4. Thank you for your replies!

I'm sorry I didn't realize this was off topic.

One other quick question though if you don't mind. I just started downloading yet another movie and it's again naming the file a .uue. Does anyone know why a newsreader would be doing this?

    Thanks again,
    Danielle

what news reader are you using ?

its been awhile -- but in outlook i believe you select all the files of that group (multipart) and rightclick and save (you can change order i think also in there)

Not all newsreaders are properly equipped to handle binaries. It might be a setting you need to change, or it may be that your newsreader isn't properly equipped to decode attachments. If you intend to use newsgroups a lot, a good newsreader can save you an amazing amount of time.

Programs like outlook will usually get the attachments correctly... but they're an incredible pain to use. Programs like newsbin, newspro, and free agent are popular and have features such as treating all segments of a post as a single file (so instead of 50 little pieces of a file that you have to track down and order... it shows you a single file that you can easily download and save).
