I've read the TMPGEnc guides and other sources on the net and I'm still a little confused about terminology. My video source is a m-jpeg avi (vga)640X480 30 fps captured on a fujifilm digital camera with video capability. Would like to make a vcd or xvcd with the best quality. Here is where I get confused. For SVCD in TMPGEnc under the VIDEO tab - SIZE shows 352x240 NTSC. The TMPGEnc guide says that this refers to horizontal by vertical lines. I thought digital resolution was defined as number of pixels by horizontal lines. Since my source is 640x480 m-jpeg avi, am I loosing resolution.
I then think that XVCD would be better since I can adjust the VIDEO - SIZE to 640x480, but I'm not sure what it is I'm adjusting. I'm not even sure I understand what my source 640x480 is referring to, ratio or resolution. Any help would be appreciated.

If this is the case, you have loaded the VCD template by mistake.

Sorry, it should have said vcd.
I checked out the guide and have just one more question. MPEG-1 is 352x240 (or 288) but through TMPGEnc the size setting is adjustable when creating an XVCD. If my source was 640x480, can I use it for the size setting in TMPGEnc? If MPEG-1 is 352x240 (or 288) how is this acomplished ? Does it really happen ?

If you want a standard VCD then you are constrained to 352x240(288). This will accomodate any resolution, provided you set Source aspect ratio=1:1(VGA) and use one of the Full screen (keep aspect ratio) settings.

If you want to go for xVCD, then you cannot choose any resolution, and whichever resolution you choose may not be playable on your DVD player.

If you want to experiment with some other templates, take a look here. http://www.kvcd.net/

For 640x480 I generally choose an XVCD size / template of 704x480 from www.kvcd.com and then choose center custom and enter 640x480 into the correct areas. Works all the time as long as your player supports it.

    Good Luck!
