I've been using PowerVCR II to capture video directly to mpeg2 (I've also tried mpeg1 and had the same problem), and most of the time, it works out fine, but sometimes when I capture, the recorded mpeg1/2 wont play, and when I try to encode it with tmpgenc, it shows the audio only being like 5 seconds, when I captured a half hour of video, as if the original capture file was corrupt. This has happened multiple times, and since I hate vhs tapes, and want to use my computer to record anything important, what's a failproof way to capture video without it messing up like this??

It most likely means you have some stability problems, a bottle neck during capture, or some other software or hardware issue. No easy answer, try changing configurations, defrag hard drive, re-install software, upgrade hardware and so on.
