  1. TMPGenc has been working well for me on most avi's I convert, but for some reason on others it doesn't recongize any audio. For example, I downloaded Spy Kids, and when you click on the Select Source button and check the Display Audio checkbox, it doesn't show any audio. The audio works fine when you play it as an avi, but TMPGenc can't find it, and if you do convert to mpg using TMPGenc, then there is no audio. Why is this?

TMPG has problems with certain encodes of avi's...it fails somewhere during the uncompresion>conversion>recompression.
Most times you can get around it by using a program like Virtual dub and extracting the soundtrack as a uncompressed pcm wav file...take that file and use it as the audio source for the encode to mpg along with the original avi as the video source.

  3. TMPGEnc has its limitation, among which the fact that it does work well with certain types of audio, like AC3 and MP3 VBR for instance.

The solution in that case would be to use special versions of VirtualDub to extract the audio, convert it to PCM Wav using tools like Headac3he for instance, then use the resulting audio file as audio input for TMPGEnc.

This should bypass the problems you are having.
