  1. Hello,
Just getting into this hobby and have some questions.

On this site it says that Tmpgenc is freeware, but when I start to encode something it tells me I only have 30 days to use before I have to register - what is that about?

So far I've encoded one VCD. Then I had to cut it to fit on two CDs. After using Tmpgenc to cut it Nero complained that it wasn't compilant. The original, uncut, version was fine according to Nero. I got the cut versions back into compiance by running them through MPGFIX. But, why does cutting them with Tmpgenc take them out of compliance?

Lastly, the one VCD I burned has a problem in that if I fast forward or reverse I lose the sound. I can usually get the sound to come back if I stop and resume it a couple times, but that's a pain. Is this a common problem? Anything I can do to prevent it?

Thanks in advance for any info.

that may be the mpeg-2 (SVCD) portion of the encoder on the later versions of TMPGEnc. if u wanna encode SVCDs beyond the 30 day trial, you need to get an older version of TMPGEnc (12a)...

  3. Ah, thanks hitech. Ok, I just saw in the history section on the Tmpgenc site that the Mpeg2 encoding just stops after 30 days, there is no registration involved. Anyone know where I can get a 12a version? Pretty please?

    Better to patch, I say.

Do a search for "TMPGEnc registry patch", it deletes a key or two which resets the 30-day...

  5. homerpez - I looked for the patch ("TMPGEnc registry patch" but I couldn't find it. Is it here on VCDhelp or somewhere else? Please give me another hint. Thanks.

Now i dont have the baddest machine on the block but wow 6 hours!! I followed the how to step by step to try this. Is this about a normal coversion time or is there a better, faster way?

  7. Truman,
Thanks for the link. But, from what I've just read, the 12a version has problems with VBRs. The original ver 12 beta didn't have these issues.

I tried http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgenc12.zip but found nothing. Do you know of a place to get it?

  8. Mawcobra,
As stated, I'm new to this so i'm sure I don't have the best handle on things . Just for comparison, last night I did a 2 hour movie divx to mpeg-2 with 2pass VBR. Average bitrate was around 2200. On a Tbird 1.1 w/ 256M PC133 and ATA100 HD, it took close to 12 hours.

  9. That site isn't working for me. But, I did find that if you go to the tools page, here at vcdhelp.com it will steer you to a site with older versions.

Also, the registry patch is discussed here...

  10. I've seen a number of posts that suggest that TMPGEnc v12 is better at VBR than later versions and gives smaller file sizes. However, if you use a bitrate viewer on the mpg that it produces you will note that the average bitrate obtained is significantly lower than that set in TMPGenc. This accounts for the apparent smaller file size !
