This is my first DVD to DVD-R guide. I have been making complete backups of DVD movies with menus on single angle movies. I am working on multi-angle movies and will post it as soon as I can. In the guide I used VTS_01_0.IFO and VTS_01_1.VOB – VTS_01_7.VOB as examples.

Software:
SmartRipper 2.41
ReMpeg 1.5
Vstrip 08f
IfoEdit 9
Apple DVD Player 2.7 (Macintosh)
Toast (Macintosh)

Hardware:
PC/P4 1.7 with DVD-Rom
Mac G4 733MHz with DVD-R burner

Step 1.
Create 3 folders. NEW FILES, OLD FILES and one the name of the movie. For this we’ll call it NEW MOVIE. Open each folder in separate windows and minimize for easy access.

Step 2.
Open Smartripper to rip. Choose BACKUP and select your TARGET folder (same place you created the 3 folders). Start the rip.
NOTE: I don’t change the region code in SETINGS so it’s more compatible with older players.

Step 3.
After you rip go to your DVD drive and open it. Copy everything except the VIDEO_TS folder.

Go to you’re NEW MOVIE folder and paste the items in it. Now check the size of NEW MOVIE folder. Now check the size of your VIDEO_TS folder. Your goal is to get both folders under 4.37GB.

Step 4.
Open IfoEdit. Click OPEN and select the VTS_01_0.IFO file of your movie (It will ask to upper case file and folders, click yes to all). In the menu bar click TOOLS and choose CREATE REMPEG2 CFFL. Save it to the VIDEO_TS folder.

Step 5.
Open ReMPEG2. Click on OPEN and sellect the ReMpeg.cffl file in your VIDEO_TS folder. Let ReMPEG2 do its thing. After it’s done click the tab MAIN. Find AVG. BITRATE in INPUT FILE section. Remember the bitrate. Next click the tab OPTIONS. Choose your SCALE FACTOR usually 40-50%. I always use 43%. Check the LIMIT MAX BITRATE box. Select 45% to 50% of the AVG.BITRATE from earlier. In the OUTPUT RESOLUTION section choose 352x480 on full screen movies and 720x480 for others. Leave all other settings alone. Click the tab MAIN and click on ENCODE name it NEW.MP2 and save to your NEW FILES folder.

Note: If you want to know the size let it Encode until you have 1% and click CANCLE. Check the size of the .MP2 file. Open it with WinDVD or any other player. Find out how many minutes and divide the size of the file using the minutes. Once you have your size per minute, multiply it by how many minutes in the movie. Now you know how big your video file will be. Now play with the MAX BITRATE to lower or increase the size of the file to your needs.

Step 6.
Encoding is complete. In ReMPEG2 click TOOLS tab. In the pop down list select MPEG-2 VIDEO STREAM EXCHANGE TOOL. In TOOL INTERFACE section select ORIGINAL VOB this will be your REMPEG.CFFL file. In NEW MPEG-2 STREAM this will be your NEW.MP2 file. In FINAL VOB name it FINAL.VOB and save it in NEW FILES folder. Click START.

Step 7.
Go to your VIDEO_TS folder select your VTS_01_1.VOB – VTS_01_7.VOB files related to the movie you just encoded and put then in your OLD FILES folder.

Step 8.
Open VStrip. Click on ADD select your FINAL.VOB file. Click on OUTPUT tab. In OUTPUT NAME use VTS_0X.VOB (X being number of your original file SAMPLE VTS_01_1.VOB). VStrip will add the sequence numbers (VTS_01_1.VOB). Save it to your VIDEO_TS folder. In SPLIT FILE SIZE(MB) section select 1024. leave all other settings alone and click RUN.
When done check your VIDEO_TS folder you should have all your VTS files in sequence VTS_01_1.VOB – VTS_01_4.VOB. Correct the names if they are wrong.

Step 9.
Open IFOEDIT click on OPEN select the VTS_01_0.IFO file to your movie in the VIDEO_TS folder. Click on VOB EXTRAS. In VOB FILE OPTIONS uncheck REMOVE P-UOPS and REMOVE MACROVISION.
Leave everything else and click OK. Click OK when done. Now click on MENU EXTRAS. In VOB FILE OPTIONS uncheck REMOVE P-UOPS and REMOVE MACROVISION. Leave everything else and click OK. Click OK when done.
Click GET VTS SECTORS it will ask to do ALL .IFO files click NO click OK when done. Click SAVE and save it to your NEW FILES folder also save .BUP aswell.
CLOSE IFOEDIT, Open IFOEDIT click on OPEN and select VIDEO_TS.IFO in your VIDEO_TS folder Click GET VTS SECTORS it will ask to do ALL .IFO files click NO click OK when done. Click SAVE and save it to your NEW FILES folder also save .BUP aswell

Step 10.
Go to your VIDEO_TS folder and move the .IFO and .BUP files you used to correct to your OLD FILES folder. Go to your NEW FILES folder and move the .IFO and BUP files you saved to your VIDEO_TS folder. Your VIDEO_TS folder should now have the new .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files. Move your VIDEO_TS folder to NEW MOVIE folder
It should look something like this.

Step 11.
Test and Burn. I use Apples DVD Player on my Mac to test the VIDEO_TS folder. The player is very picky. If it plays then it will play on any DVD-R supported player. You can also use IfoEdit to test.

I then use TOAST on my Mac to burn the movie
