Just been browsing a few posts and trying to learn a thing or two when I saw your reply in this post

Best Way to Convert DivX to SVCD

I am using 4 discs to get the quality I want. I would love to see the settings you are using to reduce the number of discs I need to use ( I get about 35/40 mins of good stuff per disc)
I use TMPGEnc' to convert my .avi's to MPEG-2 and then burn to SVCD using Nero.

    Cheers

I'm guessing that you're using CBR. Try using 2 pass VBR.
most movies can be fit onto 2 discs with very good quality (assuming a good source) using 2 pass VBR.
    Follow this guide:
    http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgencsvcd.htm
--do realize that it's going to take twice as long to encode--
what are you askin' me for...
    I'm an idiot!

By using 2 pass can I lower the bitrate or take off the noise reduction?. My issue is the fact that I have to use 3-4 discs, the Q is really good but it's a pain in the arse.
I'm mid-encode using a lower bitrate to split a 1 1/2 hr DVD rip onto 2 discs. I'll know more after I see these results.

    Thx for your interest.

    ok...let's back up a step.
are you trying to make SVCD, or XSVCD?
how long is your movie, what program are you using to encode, and what settings are you using (when it's taking you 4 discs)

--what settings did you change from the last encode (4 discs) to this one?
if you follow the guides, there is no reason you can't fit an average length movie on 2 discs with high quality. I've always been able to fit around 50 minutes or so of high quality SVCD on a disc

Sorry for not getting back to you, been v v v v busy.
I use TMPGenc, I dont care if I make an XSVCD or a SVCD cos' my player will play all.

I want to fit as much quality stuff as poss' onto each disc.
I tried lowering the bitrate to about 2000 with noise reduction filter on and got about 40 mins on a disc at 'reasonable' quality, I use CBR and 'high quality' filter.
If my movie is 2 hrs plus I'm into 4 discs.
My source quality is always very good.

I would really like to have some of your settings to allow me to get 50 mins a disc....I've not experimented with 2 pass yet or any other filters cos' although I'm getting through 4 discs a movie, the Q' is really good (apart from my last encode which was a bit jerky, but that will be another post later on).

    Cheers all
