After installing some new codecs, I ran into a problem where none of my video players such as Windows Media Player would play avi or mpg files, and TMPGenc would error out when I tried to open an avi to convert. I found I needed to delete mmswitch.ax and I also deleted some other codecs. I then installed divx 3, 4, 5, and the NIMO codec pack. Now Windows Media Player will play avi's again, and it will play music video mpgs I download off the Internet, but it won't play any of the mpgs I have created with TMPGenc - it says unsupported format. Am I still missing a codec somewhere?

I fixed this myself by installing WinDVD. Apparently it loaded the codecs I needed.
