I've tried burning VCD from avi file and mpeg file. I noticed slightly better quality from the avi file. How come I keep reading that VCD uses the mpeg format when I had no problem using avi? Is there some reason I should burn from mpeg file rather than from avi?

A VCD uses mpg format videos...the reason that u can burn using an avi is that your burning software is converting (encoding) to mpg before it actualy makes the VCD.
Most people like to use TMPG or another software to convert to mpg before burning because it gives them more control and the ability to tweak the settings on the mpg....Also if you view the mpg first and the audio in sync and the quality is good then the resulting VCD will be good...but if the audio gets out of sync when the burner converts it...your VCD will be out of sync..
