I'm using the latest TMPGEnc (2.58), and have WinDVD installed on my machine. I use a Creative Digital VCR card for my capture, which records in MPEG2 format. The problem is that, when I try opening the files to convert to MPEG1, TMPGEnc responds: "File <filename> can not open, or unsupported." Is there something I have to do to get TMPGEnc to recognize the MPEG2 codec?

I have, and TMPGEnc will de-mux with no problem, but when I try to enter the files to convert, it gives me the same error, returning the filename of the video stream.

ahh -- you have latest version 2.58 .. with that version did you read the readme files ?
you need 1. purchase tmpgenc after trial date for mpeg2 input to work
2. install powerdvd (or 2 other qualified programs) for mpeg2 to work --= windvd is NOT one of those programs ..
info is on thier web site ..
there is no way around this -- but i believe you need only to install the demo trial ware version of powerdvd and it will still work .. -
I've got tmpeg versions going back to 12a betas. Tmpeg just does not like mpeg2's straight out. you usually need a third party program like dvd2avi or avisynth to frameserve into tmpeg.
and of course you need powerdvd or windvd installed so you have the proper codecs loaded"The software said Win XP or better, so I Installed Linux" -

also - yes you can load mpeg2 straight into tmpgenc .. -
You can load mpeg2 into TMPGEnc but you need to add a plugin for m2v

hi there. I
m using tmpgenc plus 2.58 and use this plugin. on the first start, it ran well and i was able to open mpeg2 files. but now, i get this messagen >cannot open, or unsupported< though the plugin is installed and viewed in my >environmental settings<. I've also installed Power DVD and Nimo's codecs, but tmpgenc plus doesn't open this files. it's very suspect to me because it ran for the first time. however, hope someone can help me.
thanx

Hi
I have a seperate thread running on the same theme. Sorry I didn't see this one.
My problem is almost the same as the person above. I have PowerDVD4 installed. My mpeg2 opened when I first installed now they dont. I have reinstalled both programs.
HELP

Hi
My problem was solved by reinstalling PowerDVD with an older patch not the 1811 one.

I have PowerDVD and Tmpeg 2.54,what is working for me is to open PowerDVD and play an mpg2 file. With that running in the background Tmpeg will open mpg2 files. I'm sure the problem is an entry in the Windows registry but I just can't find the entry causing the problem.
-
well, fozzee, if it works with an older version of power dvd, please send me this patch.
thnx chris -
Okay, I've located and installed TMPGEnc 2.56, as well as the m2v plugin, still with WinDVD. I'm converting a 30-min MPEG2. TMPGEnc will accept the file and strip out the audio stream, which plays with no problem in WinAmp. The video stream, though, is another story. The stream will play in Windows Media Player and WinDVD, but both programs report the file length at around 11 minutes. Even TMPGEnc does not properly recognize the m2v stream, and seems to think that the file is only 577 frames long, about 1 minute. What is wrong here?

it's f*ed up! now my tmpgenc even can't handle .d2v files anymore though i have installed the dvd2avi.vfp.
what should i do? might another format c: for clean up the registry help some? *arrrgh*

why not just install avisynth, load the proper plugins, write a script and get your project done.
"The software said Win XP or better, so I Installed Linux" -
I'm not using AVISynth because I'm not trying to get AVIs. My goal is MPEG1 files suitable for VCD.
-
This is the basic process I'm using to take MPEG2 capture files and convert to VCD-Compliant MPEG1.
Export to MPEG2
Demux in TMPGEnc
Use TMPGEnc to convert video stream to MPEG1 (Problem: see earlier post)
Re-multiplex to MPEG1 in TMPGEnc
Import in VirtualDub, remove commercials, export as DivX5
Demux in TMPGEnc
Multiplex to MPEG1 with VCDMUX, and create disc with Philips Toolkit
Is there an easier way to do this? -
I use dvd2avi, save the project to a d2v file, and then compress it with tmpgenc, it works every time.
-
Does DVD2AVI allow editing? Or do I need to use VirtualDub to cut out the commercials?
-
whos talkin about avi's. use dvd2avi to make a .d2v file extract audio, convert to .wav use avisynth to script your project and frameserve to tmpeg, works brilliantly, I capture to mpeg2 on ocassion and it works great. avisynth makes tmpeg "think" it's being fed a avi.

I'd suggest you use TMPGenc to split your MPEG around the commercials, essentially cutting them out, without all of this converting. Every time you convert this file your loosing a bit of quality. Once you've split out the commercials, re-join your MPEG, and convert to the destination format of your choice.
Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything...
