I know theres a guide on the site that gives a method on how to do it without 8GB free, but it doesn't actually say how much space I would need.

I'm wanting to rip DVDs of variable length (from 20 min anime episodes up to 3 hour movies)... is it possible to do a high quality rip and convert to (S)VCD with such little HDD space? if so, mind pointing me in the direction of an applicable guide?

    Thanks

EDIT: A bit more info on my system:

I have a 266Mhz CPU, and a LiteOn 40125S CD-RW. Haven't got a DVD-ROM yet, but I will very soon, providing I am able to do these rips. 64MB of RAM, using Win98SE.

Oh also, if it is possible, how much space would I need (bearing in mind I already have space used on the drive, so I don't exactly have 4.3GB in free space)

DVDx will rip directly to VCD or SVCD, so yes, you *should* be able to do it.

Will the quality by just as good as if I did a proper DVD Rip (i.e rip to HDD first then encode to (S)VCD?) Coz I was thinking of getting a new HDD anyway... and if a proper rip will allow better quality, I guess I will get one.

  4. I wouldn't recommend ripping direct from a dvd drive unless you want to shorten its lifespan.

Buy a decent hard drive and rip to that first.

agreed.. though i guess it depends on how many dvd's you're ripping.. if you're like most ppl you do it frequently (since we're all addicts! )
hard drive is the best option (for me, using dvd2svcd and cce)

  6. DVDx (although not the best option), has an option to buffer the DVD output to either RAM or HD thus saving ware and tare on your DVD drive...

I ddi read in the guide its bad for your HDD... but why? It said something about it being constantly accessed (I assume that means constantly being read from while ripping) so how is that different to playing back a movie in the drive? If you do that the laser is constantly reading the disc.

    Anyone able to clarify?
