Ok, I know you're all going to tell me to go look in capture card review section, but there aren't always great reviews for all the cards (some aren't even covered). I want to know what people here are using, what problems people have had, and what's a good card for cheap. it seems like the older ones have driver problems. I currently have a STB gateway capture card which I don't like because of overlay and lack of capture options, plus I have to use their software. I want a capture card that's compatible with lots of software, and can capture standard resolution formats. I used to have an ati wonder (ISA) which I loved cause it was easy to use, lots of features.. But the ATI has pc resolution (320x200, 640x480). Will software allow me to change to different resolutions, or is that built in the card? Also, how do I bypass this 2meg file limit I hear about, and is it caused by the video card or windows? Basically, all I want to be able to do is capture at 352 x 480 at 25fps, with no driver problems or audio mis-syncing, and I don't want to pay that much.

Get a Hauppage WinTV GO ( < 50 USD ) and a copy of VirtualDUB and you can do what you want at the resolutions you want. The 2 / 4 gig file size limit is a Windows / FAT thing but VirtualDUB can work around it with segmented captures.

I'm a fan of ATI All In Wonder RADEON.
I can capture really good MPEG-1 files in real time with MMC and capture great AVI's through VirtualDub.
it's also a very good video card - all my PC games run great on it
Very easy to use - with loads of in's and out's I'm very satisfied!
only drawback is that it's one of the more expensive capture cards

Wow! Read the features of virtual dub!! Supports resolutions that my video capture card may not have a setting for.. that's cool. I played around with virtual dub to try to extract some divx movies so I could burn a VCD (couldn't get the audio to stop popping), guess I'll give it another try.

We seem to like the cheap Cybermail card the compgeeks used to have.

The cybermail card is sold out (rumor is someone bought them all to sell on ebay). Any other:
non-tv
uncompressed
capture cards?
I don't need or want the TV features, just need to something that I can plug composite and s-video in, and use VDub. -
