I am converting AVI files that I have captured with my DV camcorder for SVCD. When I convert them using the SVCD template in TMPGEnc they look blocky. Somewhere in one of the forums someone mentioned increasing the birate but when I try to it wont let me go above 2520.

    Whats the deal?

  2. in the templates folder there is a template called unlock.mcf.
load that after u load the SVCD template.

  3. You can not go above 2520, if making SVCD (actually You can a bit, when lowering audio from 224). Does TMPGenc allow such combinations don't know. Aud+vid should not exceed 2748 kbps (SVCD spec.), otherwise You will be dealing with XSVCD and with even more compatibility problems.

I would also suggest you look into your motion estimate setting. Ensure you are using an adequate setting for your source material. If your trying to save some time by choosing a faster motion detection algorithm, then your high motion scenes will suffer bitnoise. Using a slower search will yeild much better results.

On an SVCD, you should be seeing little, to no macroblocks. The quality should approach your source material.

I have tried the high quality motion search (very slow) but I am still getting quite a bit of blockiness. dont you think increasing the birate would help?

What does your source look like? You shouldn't be seeing that much blockiness if your going straight from your digital capture to SVCD. Only VCD tends to show that much problem with macroblocks.

As a last ditch effort, you can select "Soften Block Noise" on the Quantize Matrix tab. This will elimnate the blocks, but you'll get a softer picture for it.

My source looks great when I edit it and copy it back to DV tape. Its just when I encode and burn to SVCD and play on my APEX-1500 I get this blockiness.

What are you using to encode. Nero is famous for trying to 'fix' non-standard MPEG streams. It has a poor encoder, and makes for blocky movies. If this is the case, you should turn off the 'Compliance' setting, and try again.
