CCE 2.50+avisynth and XP sp1

I have just upgraded to XP from win 2000, and also tried CCE instead of tmpgenc.
after readin in the forums that only CCE 2.50 and 2.64.1.10 work with avisynth.
loaded up a copy of CCE 2.50 and loaded an normal AVI in CCE it all worked ok, but with the *.avs file (Generated by FitCD) CCE crashes out with a NULL pointer exception, tied the same file in tmpgenc and it all looks ok,

Do I need to step back to windows 2000 or is another problem

Not sure - I can't get Avisynth working with AVI files - they give an error.
MPEG2 loaded into avisynth work just fine.
Oh and I have XP Pro SP1 as well
