  1. Hi

I have ripped one of my DVDs to convert it to a VCD, but for some reason I am getting terrible audio sync problems. The movie starts off fine but slowly slips out of sync until the audio is about a second ahead of the video. This is happening under two different DivX encoders.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix the problem?

    Thanks

What stages do you go through to get from DVD to VCD?

  3. I go from DVD to DivX, which basically acts as a temporal smoother and makes for a very high quality encoding from TMPGEnc, which I create a PAL VCD from. D2V is brilliant for SCVD, but doesn't seem to work well at all for VCD.

I have discovered that it was the rip I made of the DVD causing problems, not the encoder. Which means I wasted about 60 hours of encoding using different settings etc. Why didn't I try a different DVD?!

Why do you ask what stages I use?

Because you asked for suggestions how to fix the problem you are getting! Without knowing the details of how you converted to VCD it was impossible to offer any advice.

I'm a bit busy just now, but I'll put it all up in 20 minutes or so!

  7. Hi (again)

Right, here's what I do. It's a roundabout route but it works well for me.

Firstly, I rip the DVD using SmartRipper. This seems to make the nicest and most reliable job of it.

Then, I use Vidomi to convert the .VOB files to a DivX. I use the DivX 5 Pro codec. The settings I use are:

    - 0-10Mb bitrate, two-pass, first pass, min quant. = 2 max quant. = 4, bidirectional encoding, GMC, light psychovisual, light pre-process source, performance/quality set to slowest, YV12 colour space

    - Process audio, one pass normalize, 192Kbps, 44100Hz

    - Enhanced AVI features disabled

It is in this stage that the problem is happening. However, I have managed to create a flawless DivX from another DVD so I think it may have been the rip. It was suggested on the Vidomi forum that I try using an Adaptive IVTC, which helped a lot but the audio still slips out of sync by about 1/2 second by the end. It also makes the video lower quality too, but this may be because I'm applying an IVTC to a PAL disc.

I have tried just creating a DivX with no sound, and ripping the audio into a .WAV separately, but it didn't help. Exactly the same problem.

I wouldn't worry too much about it just now. I'm going to try a few more of my DVDs and see how it goes, to se if it is the rip. I think it might be because I used a different ripper before SmartRipper and it may have screwed something up.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
