  1. I just downloaded a movie and the file name has both (DivX).avi so which is? does it need to be converted to MPEG to make a vcd?

  2. The DivX in the file name is just telling you that the file is Divx. DivX always uses the .avi extention. Opening up the file in media player and clicking "file -> properties -> advanced will tell you what it was encoded with.

    Yes, it has to be converted to MPEG to make a VCD.

  4. DivX is just a compressed AVI file. So technically it is both. One way to tell whether it is a divx avi file or a plain avi file is with a tool that comes with the nex divX 4 beta codec that renames all the divx avis on your hard drive to .divx
