  1. Ok I only play movies on my computer. I know that DivX is for computer only, but how is the quality of a SVCD compared to a DivX? I know that SVCD movies usually take 2 discs but this movie I have it going to need more than one CD anyhow.

So, since I'm going to use 2 cd's no matter what, would it make more sense to use SVCD than DivX?

a properly encoded divx has much better quality than a properly encoded svcd of the same size. if you have plans to play on stand alone in the "near" choose svcd. if not, you can always reencode divx to svcd later if you desire later on to play on a stand alone.

personally, if i could get a stand alone dvd player that plays divx movies, i would never use svcd again.

At the same size, yes divx definitely looks better than SVCD. But if you make, say a 2 disk divx and compare it to a 3 disk SVCD, well then its close and you will probably get different answers depending on who you ask. For pc playback only, yes there is no reason to use SVCD.

jkl: Kiss just recently released a dvd player that supports all divx formats except 3.11, for obvious reasons. Its quite expensive and really is more of a pc than a dvd player but you may want to check it out.

found the website. here's a link to the pdf on the site for anyone else who may be interested---http://www.kissnordic.dk/projects/dvd_450.pdf

man this is going to be great. it list that it plays everything( well not dvd +r/w but i wouldn't be surprised if it did) but i couldn't find a price as it is not released yet. i can't lie and say what's the most i would pay for it but i'll pay 500$ easy. i am definitely going to keep an eye out for this product.

yes -- but that was that lame ass'ed DIVX lic scheme by circuit city where you could only play a title back if you paid for it .. not connection to the video type DiVX you are speaking of ..

That old DVD player with DIVX logo is different from DIVX now.
The old DIVX is Circuit City promoted DVD format that can only be played once then discarded. If you want to ply it again then you have to connect the DIVX player to the phone line and pay again.

That divx is officially defunct now. So once the play time on the disk is up you cannot renew it over the phone like you used to.
