File Conversion/VirtualDub questions

I have hit a snag in my effort to make my own VCDs with stuff I found on the net. I d'led Gladiator from Morpheus and I watched through it no problem. I need more Hard drive space, so I decided to convert it to VCD. When I tried to do that on TMPGEnc, it said that it could not be opened or is unreadible. the file extension is avi. Another thing is that maybe the problem is that the file has the letters SMR on screen. I also tried to use Virtualdub to convert the file to avi, the conversion is allowed, but I do not know which kind of audio and video conversion I can use, because I ran out of space after only a couple of minutes...... so in short I am asking either for someone to find a program that would convert anything to VCD(MPG) or tell me which conversions to use...... sorry about the rant, but thanks all
