  1. I have downloaded a movie, which I looked forward to watch. I have connected my computer to my TV, which is working fine. The main problem is, when I play the newly downloaded movie without the ac3 codec for the sound, it runs very smoothly and looks great too. No problem there. But then, when I install the codec, then all the fun stops! The sound is great, and the picture looks fine, but it doesn't run smoothly. I have tried several codecs, but all of them with the same result. I have even tried to change my OS from 2000 to XP and again to ME. No difference!
Has anyone had similar problems, and hopefully found a solution

    My Computer is :

    AMD XP2000+
    512 MB PC2700 DDR Ram
    2 Harddrives 80 GB (7200 rpm) and 40 GB (5400 rpm)
    Gforce3 Ti200 128DDR videocard

    Please Help me.

  2. You say that the movie you downloaded came with an AC3 audio stream? Is this a seperate file or is it interleaved with the video? How big is the movie file if it is interleaved? What do you mean the movie doesn't run smoothly? Does the movie skip, starting and stopping often?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I need a little more information before I can help

  3. The movie came as one file, and like any normal divx movie, it was a AVI file on 671 MB. If it helps it was the movie "From Hell"
I do know I said samething about a AC3 soundtrack, but I don't think the movie file is AC3, but the codec has to be installed before I can play it with sound.
By saying it doesn't run smoothly, I mean whenever the camera is moving, the picture is a little "choppy"

    Hope that was enough info.

    hi.
i have the same exact problems!!
all my ac3 divx movies play a bit choppy, all the others work normal (=smooth)

ich tried several players (radlight, wmp, realone, powerdvd, bsplayer, windvd...) combinated with divx 4/ 5 + ac3 codec from edonkey/ from nimo codec pack. and than i disabled my onboard sound. but i always get the bad picture

i really would like to get help. my pc configs will follow as iīll finish my posting

oh and i canīt recognize if the picture is smooth if i donīt have the ac3 codec installed, perhaps iīll try this later

ohhh and i forgot to say that i still donīt have a soundcard (i purchased a sb 5.1 live, but i donīt think that it will solve my prob!). iīm using right now the onboard sound.

Well...other than 'You get what you pay for'...

Short answer: What's happening is that the movie was encoded without enough bitrate to support the amount of action being displayed in the video.

Medium answer: What you're probably seeing is referred to as MACROBLOCKS. Its just part of the video and has little to do with your hardware or software players. This will happen regardless of the compression used, whether it's MPEG1,2,4 or any flavor of divx. No doubt some may look better than others due to filters and playing around with other video settings. It's how you get raw video down to DVD quality (@3000-9000bps). The divx stuff (the .avi's you refer to) that is floating around, besides all the sync vid/aud sync issues, I've seen with anywhere from avg 300-800 with all kinds of resolutions with generally have these problems.

Don't get me wrong though, there's some really nice stuff out there. But to get a DVD (or anything else) of 4.5-9gb down to 600meg or so, you HAVE to give up some quality.

If you're willing to download files of these sizes. I'd recommend looking for VCD or SVCD standard DVD rips. Yes, the divx's tend to be smaller in size....but you see what the quality will be.
    Have a good one,

maybe itīs right what you said.

but i asked some people with the same files and they donīt seem have to have this problem (or they have another imagination of quality). and the movies i have came from different rippers. and i canīt believe that a 450MB divx w/ mp3 runs smooth - other than a 1200MB /ac3 (and both have the same lenght). imo, the 'big' movie still has more MB for the video stream so it should run well. (btw, the fixed-images or freeze images (i donīt know the right expression) look real nice!)

those are the reasons why i think itīs a problem with my pc.

    EDIT:
damn, jimbo, you are right: without the ac3 codec the videos run perfectly!! tomorrow, iīll try to find a different codec/ another version, perhaps there are incomatiblities with it and our hardware?

  7. If you by any chance, should be able to find a AC3 codec that works, please let me know.

    ok, i got some news!

a person solved the problem as he took the windvd codec for ac3 sound. HE/ She said "And to get divx ac3 working with windvd audio codec you need this: http://doom9.org/software.htm#filters Here you will find the audiofilters you need to get windvd codec working properly. Just follow the instructions when installing."
But I donīt know what to do there?

and this person used "moolight" as the ac3 codec, which should be very good. but i donīt get sound in ac3 movies when itīs installed. any way, you can try it: http://www.moonlight.co.il/download/?dl=odiodekoda And please say if it works for you

    EDIT:
Yeeeeah, i think i know the solution!!
you need Nandub, thats a prog with which you can edit your avis. so you open the app with the file that plays choppy. than, click on "audio" in the titlebar and there on "interleaving". make sure that the box is enabled and set the preload and the interleaving both to 128 ms! (i read that this numbers can be differents, it depends on the quality of the ac3 sound! so you could try different numbers...). now, make sure that "direct stream copy" is enabled under video and audio. than just save it as avi, and it should play smoothly

  9. THANK YOU SO MUCH. You are now my new best friend :D I tried the program Nandub, and did what you described, and it worked perfectly......more or less, but at least I can allways try to change the numbers from 128 to something else.

    But once again. Thank you!
