I am trying to find the most relable software with a timer & VCD/SVCD ect support.

A PIII-800 is a little skimpy for recording straight to SVCD. VCD maybe, if you keep it clean. I've got a PIII-850 that handled VCD ok under WinDVR2. Didn't actually try SVCD with it.
For recording to AVI I've used AVI_IO and had great luck with it. I've also used VirtualDub, but the official build lacks a timer.
Now I do my recordings with Showshifter, and it's been very reliable on that box. Excellent at recording on schedule, web based EPG support, flexible codec support, but no mpeg codecs so you'll have to record avi's and convert them. I made 8 hours of VCDs with it today.
