Call me dumb or whatever, but i thought the new firmware from Pioneer(v.1.32) would allow people with A04/104 drives to burn the new 4x media?
If it does, than the only upgrade on the A05 would be DVD-ROM speed and CD-ROM speed etc.

    Am i wrong?

  3. I think firmware will prevent 4x discs from frying your drive, but you can still only write them at 2x.

  4. If you read the Pioneer website regarding the firmware upgrade you will see that the A04, A03, etc., will now be only to write at 1X speed to the new 4X DVD's.

Q9: Will I get new functionality after applying the firmware update to my Pioneer DVD-R/RW Recorder / Writer drive? Will I be able to record at higher speed?

A9:Pioneer DVR-A03 / DVR-103 & DVR-A04 / DVR-104 DVD-R/RW Writer drives: Applying this firmware update will not change the functionality of the Writers. After applying this firmware update writing to "high-speed" certified media will be supported; please note that you will only be able to write at 1X with the "high-speed" media.

  5. And then the old type, which we can burn at 2x, will die. Stuck with 1x writing. man this takes forever.

Hold up! So you're saying that by installing that latest firmware from Pioneer, that it degraded my burning speeds???
I haven't burned a DVD since installing the latest firmware. I hope to God, that i can still write at 2x on my Apple DVD-R's?!!?

I am buying a second A04, this unit has been flashed with the new firmware so I'll report back with the good, bad, and the ugly. Should have it sometime next week

  9. I've flashed my 104's firmware, and a 2X DVD-R still burns at 2X speed.
My understanding is that the firmware upgrade limits your burning speed on 4X DVD-Rs to 1X.
