I am trying to convert a WMV to an AVI/MPEG file. The WMV contains protected content, which may be the cause of the issues I am having.
I am completely unable to do the conversion.
I have tried using TMPGEnc, GraphEdit, ASF Tools, Stoik video converter, Nero, etc as I have seen suggested in posts, but to no avail. Tried changing the extension to .asf, still nothing.
The problem, and it is a big one! - is that none of the programs can open the file; all say that it is an unsupported type.
As far as I am aware there is no problem with the actual file - it plays fine in Media Player, etc.
Any suggestions as to how this can be converted would be much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Ols

  2. sounds like you need to increase your environment settings to a higher priority....>Options>Enviroment Settings>Vfapi plug in ...........try setting directshow and both avi readers to a higher priority than everything else....just a thought!
Eh!.......don't know why it's doing that, it worked perfectly well on my system !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is yet another licencing issue with Microsoft - I believe WMV uses the MPEG4 V3 codec which MS is very protective about.

I have had succcess converting WMV using 'EO Video' which I assume has a licence to do so.

    Try that.

    Thanks for the reply.
    This is getting annoying now
EO Video cannot do any conversion with it as it is unable to determine the length of the video. Any ideas how to aid it in this or any different ideas?
    Cheers mate,

Hi guys, i have finally found a way to encode wmv files to mpeg files using tpmgenc.

Previously i was not able to do this because the new type of wmv files are protected by Microsoft.

To be able to do encode using tpmgenc, download windows media player 9, Windows Media Player Codecs 8.0 and Windows Media Encoder 9 from www.microsoft.com

After installing everything, restart the PC
And open tpmgenc to try and convert to vcd.
It should work without any error messages.
