  1. I've had a lot of success burning and playing VCD's on my Sony DVD player. But, I can't seem to get SVCD's to play. I've used TMPEnc to convert the files. I've tried 2-pass VBR and CBR at 2600 k/sec. When I try to play the SVCD on my DVD player, it's all scrambled and it hangs. Any suggestions?

based on the posts by other S360 owners, no one else could get SVCD to play on theirs either.

i'd have to say that there are more DVD players that play VCD and XVCD, than there are DVD players that play SVCD...

there are so many variants of XVCD (MPEG-1) that i've created and play well on my JVC 523GD standalone. i've used CBR and VBR bitrate encoding, 352x240 and 720x480 rez, 44.1khz/64kbps and 48khz/192kbps audio, 0-950 VBR and 2500 CBR video bitrates.

i wonder how many different variants of XSVCD are there that can actually play on SVCD capable standalones?

  7. I'm a little confused. Is XVCD just MPEG-1 with higher resolution and bitrate? Will these work with the S360?

yes, XVCD is just a non-standard VCD (MPEG-1), higher or lower rez and/or bitrate. whether or not it will work on the S360, i could not tell you. just do what i did - get some CD-RW media and try encoding 10 minute clips using different rez and bitrates to determine the S360 full capabilities.
