  1. Hi all, I need some help.

I am attempting to play a VCD...the VCD plays about 1/2 way, then stops and I get an error: Cyclic Redundancy Check. The strange thing is, it happens with 2 VCD's but not with another.

    Here is what I have:
    Windows XP
Windows Media Player (had to add VCD to regedit)

I understand that CRC Error is from the data being sent not matching the data being received, or it is the error that occurs when they are being checked and might hang a bit. Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  2. Well, one of two things seems to be happening; either you have a dirty laser lens in your drive (try getting a drive cleaner) or you have a couple of corrupted or improperly created VCDs (this is much more likely, it's happened to the best of us). You might try copying the DAT or MPG file from the disc to the hard drive before playing.

    Hope this helps

  3. Prospero,
Thanks for the advice. I have a few follow up questions.

    1. Will copying the dat to my harddrive help with the playing through media? Or is it simply to back up the VCD?

    2. Also, the VCD I have I didnt burn. So, if it is corrupted, can I still copy the .dat file to my harddrive and attempt to reburn it, or is it now corrupt regardless? I would think I can, since the corruption should be in the burning of the VCD, and not the actual data itself....but, I could be way off.

Thanks for help, again I appreciate it.

  4. 1. Actually both, I would try it just to see it will play from the hard drive. I didn't even think about keeping the file there as a backup, this way you could even repair the movie file and burn it to a new VCD later as well.

    2. to answer this; you won't know until you try. Depending on where you get the CRC error, the movie file could be perfectly fine or easily repairable: (http://www.vcdhelp.com/download/MPEG-Corrector.zip) or completely unrecoverable.

    Hope this answers your questions,
    your quite welcome,
