Am capturing some old TV shows (The adventures of Superman) early episodes are in B&W, Heres the question, if any one has any experience with this, is it better to capture in B&W (turning saturation down to 0) or using the greyscale command in avisynth. capturing the normal way, when my vcds' play even though they are B&W you can see on the TV screen hints of color now and then(annoying) which methods produce better results. (or should I just diable the color settings on the TV when I play the Disks??????

    thanks for the feedback

    Both.

As you're not going to lose any colour information in the original (as there is none), you might just as well get saturation down to zero, and enjoy the fact that Huffyuv, for example, makes the compression even better (~3.5:1 instead of 2:1).

Nevertheless, seems that even then, some 'colour' is captured - you can notice it mostly in the underscan section. So don't hesitate, while processing the video, to pipe it through either the greyscale filter or the TV-Y (luminance) filter (the difference between the two is described in VirtualDub's documentation), to eliminate any colour data.

No colour data in the file = Less data to deal with = less data for the MPG encoder to process = more data to be dedicated for the picture rather than the colour data, which is nothing but interferences.
