  1. I have burned a vcd at 32x and nero said that it burned fine. But when I play it on my standalone dvd player it gives me a disc error. It plays on the computer fine. I try it at 16x, with no luck.

I burn the same vcd on the same cdr brand, at 8x and that plays fine on my standalone dvd player.

    Am I doing something wrong?

    I have/use:
    toshiba sd2200 dvd player
    cursor 16x cdrs
    mitsumi 480ate 32x12x40x burner
    nero 5.5

It is possible that your particular DVD standalone wants a "cleaner" burn.

Supposedly (though I've not come across this personally), a slower burn speed will produce deeper "pits" that can be seen better by the laser on troubled machines.

The 32x burn is not only too fast for your 16x-rated media (you will likely get errors even on a normal data CD), but could be producing worse problems for the standalone because MODE-2 doesn't have error correction - the flaws in the "pits" will be seen more.

I have (had, it just died) an HP 8x burner, and I was able to burn all my movies at 8x without flaws (until the drive died, of course). I hear 32x - 40x burners have 8x as the SLOWEST speed, so I'd use that for all VCD/SVCD burns. It seems to work for you, so...

Some people here claim to even do 1x, 2x burns - I find that a little too slow, unless you absoluely HAVE to.

I have a Toshiba SD210E DVD player, and burn all my stuff at 16x and have not had a problem with anything yet, be it Music, mp3 or VCD/SVCD and thats an older model, it could be your CDR's try buying a few expensive big brand discs, and try it, it might also might be a problem with the DVD Player, try burning a normal audio CD at the slowest speed you can, and see if it works.

  5. Thank you homerpez and Martyn1980.

I will try an expensive brand cdr, if that doesn't work I'll stick to cheap cursors and burn at 8x.

Martyn1980, what brand do you use?

It varies i usually use a cheap supermarket disc, cause its only 2 minutes walk from me and im lazy, they are Imation discs and are £10 for 30 and ive had no problems with them, i also use Maxell, Verbatim and Tevion, and an unbranded, which were £18 for 100, but that involved a 15 minute drive

I sometimes use Phillips,Kodak or Traxdata discs, if i get problems with a fussy player or im doing a music CD backup.

  7. Thanks!

I will also try a higher speed cdr - 40x.
